Originally known as the Naval Training Center, Liberty Station opened its doors in 1923 and continued to expand through World War II. Though it served as a valuable military resource for many decades, the Navy eventually closed the NTC in 1997. The city of San Diego acquired the property in 2000 and gradually transitioned Liberty Station into a center of commerce and cultural activity.
